Definitely! It’s an engaging read with realistic characters and events. More importantly, it’s a story that needs telling, exploring issues of colorism within the Black community as well as racism in the larger society of the 1950s, which continues to the present day.

True! Ruby’s goal was independence. Eleanor’s was to forge a good life for herself through marrying well and then fitting in!

Oh I agree! With the daughter demanding answers and Ruby back in their life, a sequel is definitely possible!

Yes, but no. I felt it answered the question, but I really want to know what happens next! Epilogue please. Sequel?

I knew there had to be a connection. I thought I figured it out, but the ending still surprised me. It was so abrupt. I really wanted another chapter or two.

I connected to both, but I like Ruby more. Ruby was tough and determined to make her way out of the poverty cycle. Eleanor appears as a very typical 1950’s college student, more determined to get a MRS. than a degree. Marriage will improve her social status. The hardships of Ruby builds her strength. Eleanor’s miscarriages delete her strength. It was such a powerful book with the duel stories. I liked the ending. There was a connection between Rudy and Eleanor, which I’d been looking foras I read.

I did connect with both but Ruby was just that bit more relatable with her struggle. She had no one in her corner unlike Eleanor who had William in her life.

I enjoyed reading this one. I have visited both Philadelphia and Washington DC, so I liked the locations. 1950’s America was so different for black Americans than today. I liked that as a reader I could see the differences in wealth, status, and potential. While so many novels seem stereotypical of that generation, this one did not. It was raw and heartbreaking. Definitely keep for the 1950’s.
