I too liked the character of Lark. I think there could be an entire story written around Lark. He had so much tragedy and loss in his life yet he did still care.

I think she will try to have it logged to honor Rich. I think she also has to log it or lose the money already invested. Though logging may not be possible if a road doesn’t go in.
It is sad because not only is she mourning her husband but facing huge financial uncertainty.

I thought Lark was a great character. It was a great balance of seeming not to care, yet caring so deeply! Do you know anyone like Lark?

Yes so much death. I too thought Chub had died. So relieved he didn’t. But the end wow! It was so senseless–just an awful accident doing what so many of us do when driving–thoughtlessly reaching for something that fell off the seat. I actually wanted to know what comes next for Colleen and Chub.

The other death was the slow death to their way of life–to logging old growth forests.

I totally understand why he wanted the land so much. If I were Colleen, I would even have supported him in buying the land though it was a big risk. But to not even mention it. Definitely a jerk move and then, as you say, he had to stress about the payments on his own.

I agree they did not have good communication. She had her own secrets, but her secret keeping increased after Rich started walking on egg shells after her last miscarriage.

I hadn’t thought about the age difference, but I agree that probably influenced Rich. Definitely, yes the time period played a part. But I was a young woman (younger than Colleen) in a relationship with a man 12 years older than I in 1977. I don’t think I would have forgiven him for spending our life savings without so much as a word about it.

This book had a much bigger impact on me when it was over than while reading.

so much death – miscarriages, parents, fish, main characters, jobs. This contrasted by the 24/7 trees.

logging was required for survival – logging was literally killing them.

I couldn’t stop reading when I thought Chub had died. I was kind of freaking out!

I think the age difference along with the time period played a role. Also, Colleen and Rich didn’t seem to have a relationship based on communication. She had her own secrets.
