I was not drawn to the title or the idea of a story about an octopus. So much for judging a book by its cover…I loved it! A very clever idea as a way to present our human faults.

<p style=”text-align: left;”>I liked it. It was a great way for the author to let us know about all the character connections. He was also the character that was literally trapped while the other main characters simply felt stuck in their circumstances.</p>

I also read this book a year ago but have been recommending it to everyone! Such a beautiful story with characters you just want to keep on reading about! Including the intelligent Marcellus!

Yes! Thank you for the reminders! Cameron is Tova’s grandson – I love that. I just remembered the four humans hanging out at Tova’s new apartment at the end but couldn’t remember why. The Dead seems right too. Didn’t she find the shirt under the kitchen sink? Such a strange place to keep such a treasured item.

I too wondered how it was all going to be tied together. It took me a long time to begin to predict how the threads went together. Very well written. And Marcellus was an amazing character. I read this for another book group and remember thinking before reading it that an octopus as a main character seemed dumb. I was so wrong.

This is like a pop-quiz! I read it a month ago, and I’m finding it hard to remember all the details. Tova’s friend was Ethan, but I can’t remember which band it was. The Grateful Dead maybe? Cameron and Katie. And of course Marcellus who eventually brought them all together. I remember reading each chapter about the different characters wondering how and why they’d all be connected. And then it finally dawned on my that Cameron must be her dead son’s son. Very clever.

I wasn’t sure what to expect, but found that I enjoyed his character. I listened to the audio version and the actor has a great voice. I loved the way he brought everyone together.

So I read this book over a year ago and don’t remember some details. What was the name of Tova’s boyfriend? What band was on the tshirt of his that she ruined and went to a lot of trouble replacing? What’s the name of the younger guy who was what I remember as a failure at the beginning of the book? And his surfer girlfriend? How were they all connected at the end? Let’s get a discussion going!
