I knew before selecting the book that there was a ghost story aspect to it – one of the reviews I’d read mentioned it. But it got to be a bit of a distraction for me, especially when a ghost pushed the main character off a cliff. That was a little hard to swallow for me.

Agreed. It did take me by surprise though. I was not expecting a “ghost story” as I selected it purely by its title. Just goes to show that you should not judge a book by its title.

The supernatural element did not distract from the book at all forme. The idea of unresolved life trauma causing the soul (essence, spirit) to be bound or linger seeking resolution is not entirely foreign. St. James incorporates this element without it being overbearing. The one can almost apply a “logical” explanations to certain events. In this novel, the supernatural element helps to move the story forward as well as being a means to let the reader know about events that took place in the past.

I don’t automatically gravitate to supernatural or horror stories. St. James makes the events and the characters’ reaction to the supernatural events, if not completely plausible, worthy of contemplation.
