I usually gravitate toward strong female characters or weak ones who find their strength, but I had a real soft spot for Jake.

My in person book club discussed this book in May. We have a member who raises bees and collects honey on her farm. The music aspect was new to, if not all, most of us.

I love hearing that! I thought it was phenomenal as well, and I was so excited when it had enough readers to start a discussion group. I can’t believe it was a 2021 release and hasn’t been talked about more. We’ll definitely be including it on more lists in the future to help more readers find it.

I thought surely the author wasn’t going to leave us with Harry back in jail, but she became the queen of unexpected suspense as I raced through the final pages trying to find out what happened after he moved the truck at the protest! Was anyone else worried about him?

I was so upset and angry when I found out the dog was gone! It felt more cruel than any other moment with his father. And I also agree that the author did an amazing job building that anxiety for us about his future. I was also worried for him like it was someone I knew!

I loved Jake before the moment he was so gentle with Alice during her breakdown in the front yard. He knew that he needed to let her know he was there, but the way he let her just express the grief as long as she needed was beyond touching. The scene, along with finding out the dog was gone, were both gut-reaching for me.

I thought the same thing about reading Mad Honey first and hoped this wouldn’t feel repetitive to me (it didn’t). I loved that this book taught me different aspects, and the music tie-in was especially cool. I agree this would make a great book club pick! It’s surprising it has been out since 2021 and didn’t get more buzz…pun only semi-intended. 🙂

I grew very fond of these three characters. I will admit that concerns about Jake often overshadowed my concern for the other characters. Iwas heartbroken when he returned home and his dog was gone. There was no way he could have sustained himself in his home. Each time Alice thought about the fact that he couldn’t do the work she needed help with, I became very anxious. I was so afraid that the dying of the beehive might foreshadow Jake’s demise.

I enjoyed seeing Alice stop being a doormat, take back her power and gain confidence. She is the model of a compassionate friend, neighborhood and community leader.
