This was my first Fiona Davis novel. I loved everything about this book, especially the descriptions of NY at that time in history. The writing was great, and I enjoyed the storyline and characters. None of it seemed too far-fetched, and it made it less “dry”. I also liked how she included Nelly Bly. I read her book not long ago, so it was interesting to revisit from another character’s point of view.

And I remember John Lennon being shot, but forgot where until after I read this. I knew nothing of its history other than that, though.

I was aware that the Dakota was where John Lennon was killed. I was unaware of the rich and wonderful history of the Dakota. It was very interesting to note that the people who inhabited the building were rich but through their hard work and not part of the Old New York rich.

I remember John Lennon’s shooting but I did not know anything about the building. I enjoyed the info about the building and all the controversy over it but this book had way too much cheesy romance for me to enjoy. I love historical fiction and I don’t mind some romance in it but this was soap opera like to me.

What about the twist at the end, caught off guard … or saw it coming? Did you think that Sara was guilty from the first mention of the murder?

That is one of the things I love about the books by Fiona Davis. She really digs into the nuances of the structure of classic New York buildings.

I remember John Lennox’s shooting, but didn’t pay much attention to the actual name of the location.

Isn’t it amazing that a building can have such a rich story over so long a time period??

Just curious, did anyone know of the Dakota before the tragic shooting of John Lennon. I had never heard of it and apparently it was quite famous and rather controversial when it was built. I had to laugh when I read references to it that was almost considered to be on the outskirts of New York. When it was built most of Upper Manhattan was still farmland.
