Those are other great minor characters for sure. I thought the vet on trial, really helped add depth to Michael’s character.

This book made me really think about what not only a soldier goes through but also their families. Some may not be strong enough to make it through.

I thought the girl who wrote to Jolene played a very important part in Jolene’s recovery. Also the vet who was on trial provided Jolene a much need perspective.

Totally agree! Loved that I could appreciate the supporting characters more than the main ones.

This was a very tense read. I can’t begin to imagine what military families go through and I don’t think anyone returns from war unchanged. I do not think I took a deep breath the whole time I read. That said, I don’t think this is as well written as some of her other books. For me, there was more “telling” than “showing.”

I also liked Conny. And Mila is an angel. These two secondary characters are very important in the development of the main characters Jolene and Michael, who both have a lot of growing to do. While I admired Jolene, I didn’t always like her. And though Michael was a jerk at first, I came to appreciate him.

This book was filled with strong characters.

I really appreciated the role Conny played in the story. I feel he helped both physically and emotionally and helped both Jolene and Michael.

Mila- what a wise lady! She never stopped mothering Michael and was such a good support for Jolene.

Tami – loved her role in the story. Jolene wouldn’t have made it without her.

I can’t imagine how emotional it was when it was first published, because I was so emotional reading it now. I am not military, but live in a military town and know women who were deployed. Gratefully not injured, but I never thought how difficult coming back could be.

I read this when it first came out, and I’ve pulled it back off the shelf to reread. I remember *really* connecting with it at the time, but it doesn’t seem to get as much… love as some of Kristin Hannah’s more recent novels. I’m curious both how I’ll respond to it ten years later and if and/or how her voice has changed over the years.
