Their conflict seemed to revolve around how to parent Max with an undertone of his mom thinking that his dad didn’t fully understand Max and therefore might not fully love him (maybe I’m reading into that)…but I have to think that when she watched him tackle Max’s kidnapper, she had to feel the force of his love for Max. Just speaking for myself, that was the part when I cheered out loud! And hopefully seeing that and knowing that would help them.

Yes! My third grade teacher, Mrs. McCabe was one that all of the students loved and everyone hoped they’d get her as a teacher. You could tell she loved her students and didn’t just play school, as Budo put it. I and other students would visit her after school even after we moved on from third grade and she was always happy to see us and catch up.

I really hope so. I agree with you that they have a lot of work to do to get on the same page. I do think they have a better chance at making it now that Max is back home, versus if he hadn’t of made it back home.

Budo was as real as an imaginary friend possibly could be. Except for being able to touch objects, like Oswald. Budo was definitely more advanced than most other imaginary friends he met. He was real in the ways that mattered most – in the way that Max believed him and trusted him when he gave him guidance and advice, especially as he was saving him.

The author did a great job blurring that line. The connection between Max and Budo was critical and how much Max believed in Budo created the connections that made him real.
