I was so upset and angry when I found out the dog was gone! It felt more cruel than any other moment with his father.  And I also agree that the author did an amazing job building that anxiety for us about his future. I was also worried for him like it was someone I knew!

I loved Jake before the moment he was so gentle with Alice during her breakdown in the front yard. He knew that he needed to let her know he was there, but the way he let her just express the grief as long as she needed was beyond touching.  The scene, along with finding out the dog was gone, were both gut-reaching for me.
