I had a hard time understanding the connection of the two timelines until late in the book. Did I miss connections? Was it intentional?

I read this a while ago but I think I remember the connection was that Juneau Jane was a relative to the man in the present day timeline and the land they lived on was hers.

Most of Wingate’s books are dual timeline. The connection established in the beginning would be the town. As you get into the book you start to find deeper connections between the two timelines.

I had a hard time finding the connections as I was reading early on. It wasn’t until they found the hidden family tree that it clicked for me, by that time I felt like the story was over.
maybe because the timelines were so far apart, I struggled. Felt like I was reading 2 separate stories. I don’t usually struggle with dual timeline books.

I think we have to admit that it would be hard to top Before We Were Yours. Yet, I really enjoyed this book. Once again maybe because of the setting and time period. I loved the character of Benny.
I took a teaching job in South Texas for exactly the same reason and felt blind-sided just as she did. I think maybe that is why I could connect with this one. The poverty was astounding and the lack of trust among the minority families and lack of acceptance by the majority is spot on.
I loved her interactions at the plantation house and all the things she learned. I think her story could have been a stand alone novel easily.
Juneau Jane and the rest of that crew is slightly unbelievable. You are not going to take a southern belle and throw her into the trenches. Much of that part of the book was just hard to wrap my mind around.
