Elizabeth refuses Calvin’s marriage proposal because she doesn’t want her achievements in his name. It was a legitimate concern.
Did you know that tennis superstar Billie Jean King never had her own name on the Wimbledon winner boards? She appeared only as Mrs. LW King. In 1981, Chris Evert’s victory was listed as Mrs. J.M. Lloyd. It wasn’t until 2022 that Wimbledon decided to use a woman’s preferred name. Discuss your own opinions on women being recognized under their husbands’ names, even if they have kept their own (like Chris Evert).
Wow I did not that about Wimbledon! I think it is going to be even more important for women to keep their maiden names and have their use honored! , especially as families are smaller and there may not be boys to carry the name forward.
I feel like it is a matter of personal preference. Being married 44 years, I changed my name, but if a woman ha professional accomplishments under her maiden name, so be it. I have a neice who is a veterinarian, her doctor name at the clinic, is her maiden name, otherwise I believe she uses her married name, which is much more difficult to pronounce and spell.
I think it’s a personal choice. It’s becoming more prevalent as women are marrying later and have often achieved their own career successes before they marry.
