What do you think about Rich’s decision to use their life savings to buy the land without discussing (or even telling) Coleen? I know this was the late 70s and things were different. But wow, I can’t image making such a big decision without discussing it. If I were Coleen, I don’t think I could have forgiven that.

I agree it was quite brash. I considered the history for him that his grandad and dad had both pined (heh heh) for that land. That longing was deeply ingrained. I was annoyed that he took so long to tell Colleen. It got so stressful to wonder how he was going to make each payment.
I learned something about the ups and downs of the logging industry and the seasonal aspect of income.

Pined–ha ha!
I totally understand why he wanted the land so much. If I were Colleen, I would even have supported him in buying the land though it was a big risk. But to not even mention it. Definitely a jerk move and then, as you say, he had to stress about the payments on his own.

I think the age difference along with the time period played a role. Also, Colleen and Rich didn’t seem to have a relationship based on communication. She had her own secrets.

I agree they did not have good communication. She had her own secrets, but her secret keeping increased after Rich started walking on egg shells after her last miscarriage.
I hadn’t thought about the age difference, but I agree that probably influenced Rich. Definitely, yes the time period played a part. But I was a young woman (younger than Colleen) in a relationship with a man 12 years older than I in 1977. I don’t think I would have forgiven him for spending our life savings without so much as a word about it.

I agree, not sure I would have been forgiving. The book was all about hard choices. This was just another
